Personal Branding on Ulitzer I read an article by an author on Ulitzer.com and was amazed at the professional image it provided him. I immediately researched Ulitzer to see if there was yet hope for me. I am a technology blogger on the subject of mobile computing strategies.  As I was doing research I came across the author Ian Thain, a fellow mobile computing blogger, who had a very professional website on Ulitzer (www.ulitzer.com). Professional envy motivated me to investigate this thing called Ulitzer. Ian's website looked like he had spent a great deal of time and money on it - all things I am short on. I carefully studied Ian's website to see how it was set up.  It looked like an expensive industry portal with colorful graphics, animation and industry news. It had tabs that filtered articles, by most popular, by date, etc.  I have blogged for over 5 years so... (more)

Microsoft Starts Distributing Drupal

Today, Matt Asay, general manager of the Americas and vice president of business development at Alfresco, in his CNET blog, writes: “The single biggest distributor of Drupal just might be Microsoft. As I discovered from Dries Buytaert's blog yesterday, Microsoft's Web Application Installer comes with out-of-the-box support for Drupal, OScommerce, and other popular open-source web applications.” This Google alert for Drupal passed by my screen just as I was about to announce that the SYS-CON Media website, recently relaunched, was completely rewritten and deployed “under the hood” on Drupal. Also coming up before the end of this year is Ulitzer, the largest Drupal deployment anywhere. Ulitzer is being built on Drupal with more than two million nodes, including more than 6,000 author home pages leading to over a million original articles. Page views of Ulitzer followin... (more)

Where Do You Start with Business Continuity?

We have all been in those meetings where we have had to explain to executives - ‘what happened?' Inevitably, the consensus of the post-disaster meeting is that ‘we need to do a better job protecting the business' and ‘draft proposals in a week'.  As you walk away, you play through your mind the various options you could investigate, vendors you could call, or web sites you could surf. You soon realize that you can propose anything but the reality is -what will the executives sign off on, what will they question, do they understand how vulnerable the business is, and will this be an endless game of back and forth?   How does one embark on a protection and recovery strategy? How does someone engage and obtain executive buy-in? The real key to executive engagement is to move them from an awareness phase (‘Yes, we need to do a better job at this'.) to consideration phas... Fish Where the Fish Are: Content Distribution on Partner Sites

How well have you planned your content distribution on partner sites to help buyers? You have to fish where the fish are and often it is at another company's website.  Providers need to make their content available that matches the buyer's steps at their partner's websites.  If planning has been applied that involves distribution and measurement, providers can collect solid data on the value of that partner site, messaging traction and the performance of their content. Do Not Confuse Brand Value With Buyer Value Companies really should focus on being partners when it benefits a common set of buyers.  Too many times, providers join up because of the brands involved, but the result is little added value to the buyers.  This can be expensive and shows a lack of buyer consideration by both companies.  The worst part of this is the energy could have been directed at a b... How to Deliver Compelling Presentations

Following up on my prior article, how to deliver effective demos, here are some guidelines how to deliver effective presentations. This is a summary of an excellent seminar I attended, given by Tom Sant of Hydeparkpartnerscal We have all sat through PowerPoint presentations crammed with text in 10point font which the presenter often just reads; within a few minutes most of the audience are thumbing their mobile devices or engaged with their laptops. So, in the age of five minute attention spans, how do we keep our audience engaged? Avoid this pitfall:  Do not start the presentation with an introduction to your company, all your customers, latest earnings, partnerships, shareholders, where you or your CEO are featured, "corporate ra ra". Why avoid this? You are presenting a solution to the prospective customer's problems. Prospects are not interested in how great you a... (more)

Will Ulitzer Dominate News Content on The Web? -Gartner

Will Ulitzer and SocialYell Dominate News Content on The Web (Eventually)? is the blog title of Gartner's Anthony Bradley. In his blog entry, Bradley writes: "Hype around Ulitzer.com (the social-journalism news magazine site) is climbing. At one point they were offering authors 200% of their Google AdSense revenue... I am convinced that the only way to change the world is through collectively determining how we spend our money and our votes. Will Ulitzer be this vehicle?" Ulitzer content is grouped in 25 distinct subjects from "Aerospace and Defense" to "Travel and Hospitality." Each subject group offers an unlimited number of topics, and each topic may contain thousands of peer-reviewed feature stories, bylined articles, blog posts, news, reviews, commentary, and unique editorial content authored by top experts in their fields. Plone and Drupal: Different Approaches, Different Results

Drupal Developer's Journal on Ulitzer Plone and Drupal are two leading open source Content Management Systems (CMS). Both were recognized in the 2009 Open Source CMS awards, run by Packt Publishing.  Both also have large installed bases and large developer communities.  This is made evident by some quick searching on Google: A search for LinkedIn profiles that mention Plone (search for 'plone site:linkedin.com/pub/') turns up 1350 pages-a large increase from 500 results in 2006. The same kind of search for Drupal developers turns up 9700 pages (search for 'drupal site:linkedin.com/pub/').  This tells me that, in LinkedIn anyway, there might be approximately seven to eight times as many Drupal developers as there are Plone developers. Below I will outline the strength and weaknesses of both systems. As a site administrator who has worked with Plone since September 20... (more)

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...

A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, whic...
We are given a desktop platform with Java 8 or Java 9 installed and seek to find a way to deploy high-performance Java applications that use Java 3D and/or Jogl without having to run an installer. We are subject to the constraint that the applications be signed and deployed so that they can be run in a trusted environment (i.e., outside of the sandbox). Further, we seek to do this in a way that does not depend on bundling a JRE with our applications, as this makes downloads and installations rat...

In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
Digital Transformation (DX) is not a "one-size-fits all" strategy. Each organization needs to develop its own unique, long-term DX plan. It must do so by realizing that we now live in a data-driven age, and that technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, the IoT, Cognitive Computing, and Blockchain are only tools. In her general session at 21st Cloud Expo, Rebecca Wanta explained how the strategy must focus on DX and include a commitment from top management to create great IT jobs, monitor ...

The IoT Will Grow: In what might be the most obvious prediction of the decade, the IoT will continue to expand next year, with more and more devices coming online every single day. What isn’t so obvious about this prediction: where that growth will occur. The retail, healthcare, and industrial/supply chain industries will likely see the greatest growth. Forrester Research has predicted the IoT will become “the backbone” of customer value as it continues to grow. It is no surprise that retail is ...
