HP Tuesday said it's buying privately held Fortify Software, the security house, on undisclosed terms.
Fortify is supposed to find, fix and prevent security vulnerabilities in companies' custom-made business-critical software applications before they can be exploited.
The pair have been partnering for the last year of so and in February introduced Hybrid 2.0, described as an advanced security analysis technology that strengthened an earlier integration. HP said it would accelerate development of that widgetry.
Fortify will be run initially as a standalone entity and only integrated over time into the HP's Software and Solutions business.
Fortify's products, like its signature suite Fortify 360, which automates key processes in developing and deploying secure applications, will become part of HP's Business Technology Optimization application portfolio.
HP's software can use all the fortifying it can get. Ousted HP CEO Mark Hurd hadn't gotten around to shoring the unit up.
Fortify's 750 customers include government agencies and 200 of the Fortune 500. The seven-year-old company has reportedly been profitable since last year. It was started in 2003 by Kleiner Perkins in its basement and raised $40 million.
IBM recently bought PC security house BigFix, and Fortify competitor Ounce Labs last year.
