CCID Consulting: Future Bright for Secure PCs in the Chinese Market

BEIJING, Nov. 5 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), recently released its article discussing a bright future for security products in China's PC industry.

With the PC market heating up, manufactures have realized that product differentiation plays a very important role on the market. In the future, security will become the manufactures' greatest advantage. The secure PC's first appearance was in 2005, and the secure PC's concept attracted much attention. However, a stagnation period soon took over, and it has only been recently when China's PC manufactures have begun to emphasize on the development of the new generation of PC security products, with domestic leaders like Tsinghua TongFang and Great Wall focusing their efforts on this developing industry.

Demands for information security also continue to attract the attention of the Chinese government, as well as the PC industry on the whole. And, with the Internet era, PCs are facing ever more hostile environments, such as virus', hackers, junk mail, system vulnerabilities, and cyber crime, so the traditional information security applications like standard firewalls, virus prevention and intrusion detection software will no longer satisfy the growing demand of users, especially in the industry market. Government bureaus, the armed forces and specialty areas related to national security have very high demands from their security systems. Also, there are now also urgent security issues to be solved in crucial industries such as finance, telecommunications, civil aviation and electrical power. In other commercial fields, the requirements for secure PCs are also gradually blooming. Despite the previous forecast that 70% of PCs would collocate the secure chips in 2007 didn't materialize, the market environment for secure PC is becoming mature.

Governmental support has become the greatest advantage for China's manufactures. China's related policies regulate that the products related to code technology should be designed, produced and sold by the Chinese manufactures which have the State Password Administration Committee's appointed aptitude. In the "eleventh five-year plan" and "863 Program", "trusting computing" technology has been listed as the focal point. The "2006-2020 China's Informatization Development Strategy" pointed out that trusting computing technology is the basis of national information security management. Currently, the embryo of China's secure PC industry chain has basically been formed. At the upstream of security chips, manufactures such as Lenovo, SINOSUN and JETWAY master some core technologies and many PC manufactures are now ready to take part. However, the present industry chain can still be improved. The secure PC industry has a great potential.

As for technology, the secure PCs with the trust computing technology only have the solutions for TPM security chips. In the future, the manufactures will have the integrative research on trust computing, trustworthy networks and trustworthy software as well as melding the TPM technology in products. A comprehensive secure solutions plan must provide self-contained safeguards for terminals, chips, mainboards, BIOS and operating systems. At present, there is no uniform standard for secure PCs. It is necessary to constitute the standard that should be accordance with international standards.

As for manufactures, they are now realizing the impact of the growing expectations from customers. Users are demanding better quality and more choices when looking at security products. They are no longer satisfied with simple concepts such as fingerprint identification; they now want comprehensive protection for information security of terminal PC systems, data security and so on. This increase is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for manufactures. As for the family and individual users, the questions on PC security focus on the external network. The manufactures should emphasize on the how to resist the dangers from external networks because the users pay attention to their reliability.

Time is still very much needed for secure PC to be dominant, but it will definitely be popular in the future. TPM chips will be the PC's standard configuration with video cards, audio cards and network cards. When the secure solution that is based on the integration of software and hardware take part in the R&D, production, sales and services, secure PCs will be popular. It is necessary for manufactures to set up the secure PC alliance in order to realize the linkage of industry chain's upstream and downstream. In addition, the secure PC's R&D should pay attention to the users' actual demands. TongFang and Great Wall have made the secure PC their core strategy. CCID Consulting thinks that with the maturity of market demand and technological standards, secure PCs will become one of the mainstreams of the PC market.
